CHAPTER ELEVEN

When Carlton woke up, he was in the back of an unfamiliar car. He blinked his eyes open and saw daylight, then quickly closed them. It was too soon. He wasn’t ready to look at the world.

That wasn’t all. Where was he? When he’d opened his eyes, he’d seen he was in a car, but the car they’d been driving had been totaled when Ricardo’s vehicle rammed it. Where had they gotten this vehicle?

The car smelled like cologne. English Leather, maybe? No, that was a mental association. He was smelling cheap cologne combined with too much leather cleaner.

As far as Carlton could tell without opening his eyes, he was in the car of a man who spent a lot of time at a casino. Not a high-class establishment, either. Someplace tacky.

Where would Mabel have found another car? He didn’t think she would have carjacked a passing motorist, although he couldn’t be sure. Mabel was not a benevolent person.

It didn’t seem the most likely explanation, though.

No, she must have taken one of the vampires’ surviving vehicles. He was sprawled in the back of a vampire car, feeling like he had one hell of a hangover.

At least he’d slept, for what that was worth. Considering the pain behind his eyes and the thick, dry feeling in his throat, he would be at death’s door if he hadn’t slept.

Carlton slowly opened his eyes again, confirming that Mabel was driving the car and Amber was sitting in the passenger seat next to her.

What the hell was Amber doing there? The woman wouldn’t die. He should have known better than to assume otherwise, considering how much he’d seen her survive the night before.

She was on the passenger side of the car, shifting uncomfortably but looking fine. With all the abuse she’d suffered, she should be dead or crippled for life. Carlton didn’t understand why she wasn’t, but it didn’t seem like the time to ask.

“Shouldn’t you be dead?” was not a great conversation starter.

Thinking about the abuse he’d seen her suffer, Carlton remembered his hands. He held them up for inspection and saw that while they were still raw from the workout he’d put them through, they were much closer to being healed than he’d expected.

One mystery after another, but one thing was clear. They’d survived the attack on the highway and were still on the road to Pennsylvania.

He closed his eyes again, thinking he’d doze for another minute, then wake up for real and find out what was going on. It didn’t work out that way. When he closed his eyes, he drifted back into a deep sleep.

This time he had a whimsical dream in which he was beating vampires with a gigantic crowbar. Every time he hit one of them on the head, a chime sounded, and an ice cream cone popped out of its mouth.

Coming out of that dream into reality was disconcerting, especially when he remembered that he really had hit vampires with a crowbar. He caught sight of the crowbar.
